Professor Karen Moore

Professor Karen Moore is the University’s Chief Operating Officer and Clerk to the Board of Governors. She has executive leadership responsibility for Professional Services and as Clerk to the Board of Governors, she is responsible for university governance.

Karen is a solid state physicist and was awarded a PhD with honours from the University of Twente in Holland, having previously gained a first class physics degree from the University of Nottingham. She has an internationally recognised research record and was promoted to a chair in 2004.

Prior to moving into higher education, Karen worked as a project manager for a large electronics research and development company. She has held a diverse range of senior roles, in academic and professional services, leading on large-scale, cross-university programme developments, change management and enhancement projects.

Karen has extensive governance experience and has held a number of non-executive roles in the further education sector. She was chair of corporation for a sixth form college in Greater Manchester for 10 years, and then chair of the board of trustees for a multi-academy trust.

Karen has been involved at a national level in shaping widening participation policy. She was a member of the Higher Education Funding Council for England’s National Widening Participation Co-ordination Team for eight years, responsible for supporting HEFCE’s widening participation strategy and Aimhigher partnerships, working with universities and further education colleges across the region and beyond.
