About my career
When deciding where to pursue my PhD, I sought a university that offered both a robust academic environment and a vibrant cultural setting. Manchester Metropolitan University stood out for several compelling reasons.
Firstly, the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Manchester Met was growing rapidly and gaining a strong reputation. This growth was particularly evident in the impressive achievements and innovative research being conducted. I was drawn to a specific research group within the department, renowned for its outstanding track record not only at Manchester Met but also in the wider academic community. I had an interest in endothelial dysfunction and developing an understanding on vascular biology, so their pioneering work and the opportunity to collaborate with leading experts in my field were key factors in my decision to choose Manchester Metropolitan University.
Secondly, the university’s location in Manchester, a city known for its rich industrial history and dynamic cultural scene, was highly appealing. Manchester offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity, providing an inspiring backdrop for my studies. The city’s vibrant international community made it an ideal place for cross-cultural exchange and personal development.
Choosing to study in the UK was driven by the country’s prestigious academic standards and its emphasis on research excellence. The UK is home to some of the world’s leading universities, and its education system is globally recognized for producing high-quality research and fostering critical thinking. I gained a lot of skills during my time at Manchester Met including project management, strategic planning, understanding ethical regulatory considerations, adaptability, and resilience and much more, all of which I use in my career.
My first job after graduating was, and still is, as the Head of Innovation. Securing this position was a combination of rigorous preparation, strategic networking, and leveraging the expertise I gained during my PhD at Manchester Metropolitan University. During my time at Manchester Met, I had the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research and collaborate with leading experts in the field of biomedical sciences. This experience not only honed my technical skills but also provided me with a deep understanding of how to translate scientific research into practical healthcare solutions. In addition to my academic qualifications, I actively participated in various professional development workshops and conferences, which helped me build a strong professional network.
In my current role, my responsibilities encompass consolidating a flagship innovation program, developing a bottom-up innovation management process, and identifying, nurturing, and expanding innovative projects and initiatives. I manage European projects and consortium alignment, ensuring a high standard in the hospital’s innovation outputs. My duties also include stakeholder management and strategic alliance development, creating instruments to support innovation and research programs, introducing new technologies for care continuum pathways, and representing the institution at think-tanks, conferences, and events.
My top tip for students
Build a solid network and a strong personal brand. A strong personal brand is key for success, as is having a clear vision for your work and what you would like to achieve.
