Research: Creative AR VR hub
Exploring ways to use extended reality and metaverse for creative industries, tourism, health and education.
Summary
Research summary
-
January 2013 onwards
Extended Reality (XR) and the Metaverse are increasingly important technologies with the power to reshape industries.
We work with organisations and industries to understand and exploit the potential of these technologies to transform their operations and services.
With access to mass-market headsets and mobile devices increasing, the scope and scale of potential applications is expanding rapidly.
We are investigating healthcare applications for training surgeons, teaching CPR and helping to treat patients who have had pulmonary disease, shoulder injuries and strokes.
Our work is helping visitors to the Manchester Jewish Museum, the Geevor Tin Mine Museum, the People’s History Museum, and the Museum of Science and Industry experience collections and exhibits in exciting new ways through a mix of XR and the Metaverse.
As partners in international ‘smart city’ projects we are assisting authorities in Dublin, Shanghai, Manchester and the Lake District to find new ways to attract tourists with digital experiences.
Future lawyers will get virtual courtroom experience through our Moot Court project, while trainee marshals are learning in virtual reality how to tackle small fires.
We’re also piloting the use of XR to help young children develop language skills, and colder children contribute to oral histories.
