Rico Murray
BA (Hons) Business Psychology
What sparked your interest in Business Psychology?
Since studying Psychology at A-level, it has become my favourite academic interest and has intrigued me to study further. As I enjoy working with and trying to understand people. I did not want to do a Psychology degree alone as I was not as interested in the job opportunities from that degree. As soon I saw business psychology at Manchester Met, and saw what the course involved, it was an easy choice for me. Integrating psychology into a broad discipline such as Business psychology opens many paths for me and allows me to work in a range of different sectors in the business industry
From your time at Manchester Met, which skills do you find most helpful so far?
Learning how to expand my employability through networking and the necessary actions required to put myself in the best positions to secure a good profession that I enjoy. Also, learning how to research and write academically is a skill enhanced through higher education.
Outside of the course teaching, what other opportunities do you get involved in during your time at Manchester Met?
I take part in the basketball team in the active campus sessions and compete in weekly matches in the campus league. I also take part in Jiu jitsu on Tuesdays and work as a Peer Assisted Learning leader, helping mentor students in the 1st year.
What are your greatest achievements so far?
Achieving a 1st class grade in my first year was a major accolade for me as I have been to University previously and struggled to attain such grades. This showed me that when I am able to focus all my energy into something, with minimal distractions and hard work, I can achieve anything I put my mind to.
What advice would you give to students who aspire to a career in Business Psychology?
I would say go for anything as long as you enjoy it. Read the course content and see if the modules appeal to your interest and something you may want to do when working a full-time job, but also remember you don’t have to work in something related to your degree so if you find it interesting then do it. Just make sure to engage with all of the amazing opportunities at your disposal. Time goes fast so don’t let them pass by.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to continually develop personally and professionally, and my next main goal is to secure a placement role and move out into my own place. This space will allow me to grow significantly and be independent. It also puts me into a great position to secure a profession I enjoy after graduation.
