Summary

About our research

The Manchester Centre for Public History and Heritage (MCPHH) explores the complex economic, social and cultural relationships that connect people, places and the past.

Building on the work of the Manchester Centre for Regional History, we encourage individuals and communities to engage actively with history.

Our engagement activities include oral history training, community archaeology, collaborative partnerships with museums and archives across the UK, and international heritage research in Europe and south Asia.

We aim to build links between academia and the public and be recognised internationally for excellence in publicly engaged research.

Our research teams have excellent links with public history and heritage organisations, including regional, national and international organisations, such as:

  • Manchester City Council

  • Manchester Histories

  • Chetham’s Library

  • The Pankhurst Centre

  • National Trust

  • Historic England

  • Historic Environment Scotland

  • National Museums Scotland

  • Cadw

  • the Ashmolean Museum

  • UNESCO

  • National Museum Ireland

We also have links with a range of universities and research centres, including Leibniz University in Hanover, McGill University in Montreal and the Raphael Samuel History Centre at the University of London
