Working for yourself

You don’t have to wait until you graduate to start working for yourself.

At Manchester Met, you’ll be given the support and encouragement to develop your ideas while you study.

If you’re still just nurturing an idea, our careers service runs workshops on getting your business plan together and the developing the motivation, skills and networks you’ll need to succeed.

But if you’re already up and running, the support of our Student Enterprise Society can help you stay up to date with local opportunities.

And if you’re looking further ahead, to life after graduation, you might want to check out Innospace, the University’s start-up incubator. As a student you can join as an associate which entitles you to exclusive benefits, including office space and start up support.

Manchester’s a keenly entrepreneurial city, with a wide range of structured support - from mentoring and business accelerators to low cost premises and a well established networking scene.

If you’ve got a great idea and the drive to match, we can help you make it a reality at Manchester Met.

Be self-employed

Every year hundreds of Manchester Met graduates become self-employed. There’s many reasons why you might choose to take this step, including:

  • a desire to be your own boss
  • you want to do something new that nobody else is doing
  • it’s the standard for your profession - as it is for artists, designers, makers, therapists and many in the media

If you’re planning on being self-employed, you’ll want to be as prepared for life after graduation as those searching for jobs.

Our careers and employability service offers personalised support to help you build a robust business plan as well as signposting services providing the extra support you might need.

You’ll get access to all the great benefits offered to the University’s other entrepreneurs, including:

  • subsidised office space at our start-up incubator, Innospace
  • the chance to join AccelerateMe, a five month intensive business development programme that fits around your studies
  • free access to the Manchester growth start-up support programme to plan, launch and develop your business
Manchester Met were very helpful and kept me engaged throughout the course. The lecturers always had time for me if I had any queries while also respecting me as a working professional. This gave me confidence and a taste of the working industry for when I graduated.
