Targeted Learners

An important part of our work focuses on working with learners who are underrepresented within higher education. We offer targeted support to learners who are care experienced, first in their family to access higher education, learners with additional needs and mature learners.

  • Learners with Additional Needs

We offer a small number of on campus events per academic year, for learners on the autism spectrum and those with other mental or physical challenges who may benefit from a more intimate visit to our institution. These events introduce learners to pathways to higher education and offer guidance for effective transitions through the education system. Details will appear on gmhigher.ac.uk when the events are confirmed.

  • Care Experienced Learners

We work in collaboration with Greater Manchester Higher to provide impartial advice to learners, teachers, local authorities and carers/ guardians who are care experienced. Information on the projects we support can be found on the Greater Manchester Higher website here.

The university also supports learners who are leaving 14-16 provision as care leavers through the Inclusion Service. This service also provides advice and guidance to care leavers, those estranged from their families and carers.

  • First in family to consider Higher Education

Our award winning scholarship programme, First Generation, shows learners how universities can change their lives by helping learners from the North West secure an undergraduate place at university. The programme provides financial support and continued professional and personal support throughout their studies and into their careers.

The programme targets learners who will be the first generation in their family to go to university.
