Attending lectures, seminars and study sessions

As a student at Manchester Met, you’ve invested in your future. The more lectures, seminars and study sessions you attend, the better your results will be.

You should aim to fulfil all your academic commitments. If you’re not able to do that, here are some things you need to know and do.

Managing your attendance

Log on to the student attendance portal.

Here you can:

  • Submit an absence online, if you are unable to attend a class
  • Check your overall attendance throughout the year

How and when you register your attendance changes if you are studying on a Tier 4/Student visa.

Attendance registration

How?

  • Tap and hold your student ID card against the card reader.
  • The reader will light up, beep once and display your name.
  • Where there isn’t a card reader in place, your tutor will register your attendance via their online register.
  • Please tap only your card, not your purse or wallet.
  • Please be aware - scanning in a card for someone else, giving your card to someone else to scan in for you, or scanning in and then not attending is considered misconduct under the MMU Student Code of Conduct and may result in disciplinary action.

When?

  • Swipe your ID card as soon as you arrive for any timetabled sessions.
  • You must register your attendance from 10 minutes before the start of your class up until 10 minutes before the class is scheduled to end. If you scan in 10 minutes after the scheduled start of class, you will be marked in as late.

  • In rooms without a card reader, your tutor will register your attendance for you via their online register.
  • Tier 4/Student Visa holders can register their attendance via mmu.ac.uk/attendance where a card reader is not available.
  • Please be aware - scanning in a card for someone else, giving your card to someone else to scan in for you, or scanning in and then not attending is considered misconduct under the MMU Student Code of Conduct and may result in disciplinary action.

When?

  • Register your attendance at the beginning of each timetabled activity.
  • You can tap in from ten minutes before the start of class.
  • Tier 4/Student Visa holders can self-register their attendance via mmu.ac.uk/attendance when card readers are not available in the classroom.
  • Self-registration is only available whilst connected to MMU Eduroam Wi-Fi or logged in to a University PC / laptop.

Connect to the University’s Wi-Fi on your smartphone, tablet or laptop, or use one of the University’s PCs available in the IT drop-in zones. Each time you attend a timetabled class, visit the student attendance portal at mmu.ac.uk/attendance and log in using your student ID and password. Frequently asked questions about attendance

  • Am I expected to attend all of my timetabled sessions?

You should attend all of your timetabled sessions unless you are informed otherwise by your tutor. Your tutor may on occasion inform you that a session is optional, but the session will still appear on your timetable. If you are unable to attend for any reason, please submit an absence online at the attendance portal mmu.ac.uk/attendance , or for further guidance contact the Engagement Team via [email protected]

  • Whose attendance is being recorded on the attendance registration system?

The attendance registration system will be in place for all Undergraduate and Tier 4 international students, unless otherwise advised. Certain Postgraduate students will be advised to also use the system.

  • Why does the University record my attendance?

Research shows the positive links between good attendance and good grades. We care about our students getting the best outcome possible and therefore have a duty to try to help in any way we can. We use the registration data to track attendance levels and identify students who need extra support. It allows us to intervene before a student’s poor attendance puts them at risk of failure.

  • How do I register my attendance?

The attendance registration system uses the following registration methods:

    • RFID (touch) card readers

Where there is a reader in the room, you are responsible for registering your attendance. Your attendance is registered by placing your student ID card against the reader (much like a contactless payment card).

    • Online Register

In rooms with no readers, your tutor is responsible for registering your attendance using the Presto Online Register.

    Tier 4 International student

Use the card readers where available, and the self-registration application if there is no card reader present: mmu.ac.uk/attendance

  • Is it compulsory for students to register their attendance?

    Yes.

  • ‘No Timetable’ message on card reader

If the ‘No Timetable’ message comes up on the card-reader display, then it may indicate that:

You are attending a session which you are not timetabled for; or,

You are attending a session deemed to be an alternative one, but without this change having gone through timetabling.

Please check your timetable and attend the correct sessions. Your personalised timetable is available to view on your virtual learning environment at MyMMU. If you believe your timetable is incorrect, please visit a Student Advisor at your nearest Student Hub and explain the problem. Your timetable can only be changed in exceptional circumstances. If you wish to attend an alternative session and your Unit Leader agrees to the change, they need to email Timetabling to get this changed.

If you are concerned that any sessions have not been registered correctly, or you have attended an alternative session without the change being made to your timetable, please contact the Engagement Team who will be able to update your record.

  • The card reader is not functioning

If a card reader displays either an ‘Offline’ message, or the screen is blank, this should be reported to the IT Helpline on 0161 247 4646 so that we can resolve the issue as quickly as possible.  A correctly functioning reader displays the room number.

  • I have received an invite to a meeting with regards to low attendance/non-submission of coursework/low grades. What is the meeting? Why should I attend?

Meetings are set up for you to discuss your engagement with a relevant member of staff. This is an opportunity for you to discuss the mechanisms of support that can be put in place in order for you to succeed. It is also an opportunity for you to let us know if you are experiencing any difficulties which are preventing you from engaging fully with your course. Failure to attend these meetings may result in formal action being taken against you via the Student Suspension, Transfer and Withdrawal Policy.

  • How can I find information about my attendance?

You can get an overview of your attendance at mmu.ac.uk/attendance.

  • What do I do if I cannot attend a session?

The University understands that from time to time there may be a good reason why you cannot attend a class. You must record any absences via the student attendance portal using the following link: mmu.ac.uk/attendance

  • What happens if I do not attend?

Students with poor engagement levels will receive notification that this has been noted by the University and be given a period of time to improve their engagement. Continued poor engagement will trigger a further notification inviting you to a meeting with a relevant member of staff. This meeting is designed to discuss your engagement levels and to enable you to utilise the appropriate support mechanisms to succeed in your academic studies. If you do not engage with this process or are unwilling to improve, you will be placed on the Student Suspension, Transfer and Withdrawal Policy, which may result in your withdrawal from the University.

  • I am a Tier 4/Student Visa holder, is my attendance observed in the same way?

The University is required to observe the attendance of all Tier 4/Student Visa holders (i.e. those students who are subject to visa restrictions) at timetabled sessions, in order to comply with the requirements of the Home Office under our Tier 4 licence. The International Office are responsible for overseeing and managing the attendance for Tier 4/Student Visa holders. You can contact the international office at [email protected]

You should sign in for timetabled sessions using the card readers within the classrooms.  If no card reader is available, you should use the app to self-register your attendance at mmu.ac.uk/attendance, or notify the international office by email of any planned or unplanned absences. To use the application, you need to be connected to the University’s Wi-Fi on a smart phone, tablet or laptop, or you can use one of the University’s networked computers and laptops.

  • I have received an Academic Warning, what should I do?

If you receive an Academic Warning, you should contact the named person within your letter, or the Programmes Team, immediately to discuss your engagement. The details of whom you should contact will be included on the letter. It is important that you respond to Academic Warning letter within 2 weeks of receipt to ensure your case is not escalated further.

  • My attendance record looks incorrect – who can I contact?

If you think there are any errors in your attendance, please contact the Engagement Team who will be able to look into this for you: [email protected]

Frequently asked questions about attendance for Tier 4/Student Visa holders

  • Whose attendance is being observed through the attendance registration system?

All Tier 4/Student Visa Holders on undergraduate and taught postgraduate courses where timetabled activities are published on www.mmu.ac.uk/students must register their attendance through the attendance system.

Some students may be exempt if their individualised timetable is not available online. A separate procedure exists for students on postgraduate research programmes; researchers are required to evidence monthly RD9 forms, supervisory meetings. RD9 forms can be completed on https://skillsforge.mmu.ac.uk/mmu/ and must be signed by your Supervisor and submitted to your Faculty Research Administrators.

  • Why is the University observing the attendance of Tier 4/Student Visa Holders?

Your entry clearance or leave to remain in the UK as a Tier 4/Student Visa Holder  was given to you for the purpose of study, as such; you are required to study on a full time basis and attend ALL classes.
