Chartered Manager Degree Apprentice, McDonald’s
Why did you choose a Degree Apprenticeship?
I chose to do the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship as I had no idea what I wanted to do as a career. By undertaking the Apprenticeship it means that I can study while working, as well as providing for my family without losing any income.
McDonald’s is known for its degree apprenticeships and always offered them to Business Managers. In 2019, they expanded the opportunity for Assistant Managers and I jumped at the chance to broaden my knowledge and skills within the retail industry.
Looking back over your time so far, how have you found the whole experience?
The experience has been eye opening as well as incredibly rewarding. It has made me realise that anything is possible, that you are never too busy and you can work while earning a degree and bettering your education. The University has been amazingly supportive and there is always someone you can go to with a query or question.
How are you hoping a degree apprenticeship will support your career progression?
I am hoping that this degree apprenticeship will not only open a lot of doors within McDonald’s but also further afield if I wish to take my skills elsewhere. With everything that we are learning within the degree, it can easily be taken elsewhere within the retail sector as well as other fields.
What impact has your degree apprenticeship had in the organisation?
By McDonald’s offering degree apprenticeships, they have been able to retain employees who would have gone elsewhere for work or to progress in a career. Personally, the degree apprenticeship has enabled me to make improvements in the restaurant for us to be able to achieve people auditing goals.
Do you have any advice for future degree apprentices?
Always ask for help if you are struggling with a topic, time management is vital, use the support sections and guidance on your Moodle page, and enjoy it!
Always look out for any additional events that are being held at the University, for example career advice or networking events.
