Discover all of the important procedures you need to follow when moving in, and a few handy tips to get you settled in to your accommodation.

  • Arriving and key collection

During the moving in weekend the roads can be busier than usual. Make sure you leave plenty of travel time to arrive on time for your key collection appointment.

On arrival at your accommodation, you will need to report to your designated key collection point and present your photo ID. Depending on your accommodation choice you will receive either a key, swipe card or fob on arrival as well as a welcome pack.

    Find your key collection point.

Please do not lend your keys, fob or swipe card to anyone, or leave them in the communal areas and avoid having your name or room number on your keyring in case it is lost or stolen. If you do lose your key, swipe card or fob please talk to your accommodation’s reception.

    Parking

You can select a time slot for your arrival day and will be allowed limited parking time while you move your belongings in. Information about booking your time slot will be sent three weeks before your moving in date via email.

  • Complete your check-in inspection

On arrival you will need to complete a check-in inspection.

This must be completed digitally via our online form. You’ll receive an email after you’ve checked in with access to an inventory of all the items in your room. This is an opportunity to check whether anything in the room is missing or damaged, and will be important when you move out. When you leave, an inspection is carried out by a member of staff and you will be charged for any missing or damaged items.

  • Insuring your belongings

As part of your accommodation fee, you are covered by the university’s block insurance scheme for your possessions, provided by Endsleigh. It is important to check that the policy is adequate as you may need to take out further cover for particularly valuable possessions.

Find out more about your insurance cover.

We would also recommend that you mark valuables with a security pen before you get here and register your property on the Immobilise website.

  • Your room

We want you to make your space your own, but you should also think about the comfort and security of your flatmates.

All bedrooms are provided with a notice board for pictures and posters. Please don’t stick anything onto the walls using nails, tacks, pins, or screws. This could damage the paintwork and you may be charged for damages when you move out.

Please make sure that your electrical equipment is safe and meets the required electrical safety standards.

  • Meet your neighbours

Make the most of your first few days in university accommodation and introduce yourself to your neighbours.

The majority of students share facilities and it’s worth having a discussion with your flatmates about each other’s preferences and routines so you can all live comfortably together. You may want to discuss how you will share cleaning duties, washing up and taking out the rubbish.

  • Televisions

Some of our residences have televisions in communal areas. These TVs do not have a license to view live TV but you can connect devices or link to your own streaming services.

You are welcome to bring a television with you for your room, however you must make sure you get a TV license if you do.

Find out more about TV licenses.

  • House rules

Your accommodation is a place of study, rest and fun. However, being respectful and considerate of your flatmates is essential to allow them to enjoy the comfort of the space as much as you. Once you have settled into your accommodation, you may want to agree some house rules with your flatmates.

If you need support in matters relating to your flatmates or resolving a dispute, please contact our residential life team.

  • Cleaning

You are responsible for keeping your bedroom clean and contributing to the cleanliness of your shared space. Take a look at some of our cleaning tips to see how you can keep on top of this:

    • Wash up your dishes as you go along rather than letting them pile up. Try not to let them soak in the sink as this is one of the most common annoyances in shared accommodation.
    • Invest in a good multi-surface cleaner and a non-abrasive cleaning cloth or sponge to wipe up spills as you go. Don’t allow stains to build up, especially in your microwave and on your cooker, because they become more difficult to remove as they are repeatedly heated.
    • Wipe down your shower and sink after you have used them and remove hair from the plug before it builds up. This will prevent any unwanted blockages and keep your shower mould free.
    • Use a toilet brush and a good toilet cleaner to regularly clean the toilet.
    • Vacuum the carpets and mop floors regularly. Vacuum cleaners, mops and buckets are available to loan from most accommodation receptions.
    • Find out where your accommodation facilities are, such as the laundry and the rubbish bins.
