Rachel Marchbank-Smith

My profile

Biography

I am a qualified adult nurse and specialist community public health nurse with 14 years’ experience in the NHS and over 10 years as a Senior Lecturer teaching pre and post registration nurses at Manchester Met. Recently completed a 5 year tenure as Department Education Lead (DEL) leading the implementation of the institution’s education strategy in our school. Currently an associate innovation scholar, graduate outcomes lead and co-lead for student mental health and wellbeing in our faculty. I lead the delivery of Schwartz Rounds across the Faculty of Health and Education.

I’m interested in compassionate pedagogy, relational leadership and the process of transition from healthcare roles into working in HE. I firmly believe that learning is a collaborative and transformative journey that requires respect, compassion and dialogue. I demonstrate these values both in my teaching and my mentoring of colleagues and am an advocate for compassionate pedagogy as a means of achieving inclusion.

I am a Senior Fellow of Advance HE (SFHEA), NMC Registered Nurse (Adult), Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor), NMC Teacher and Community Practitioner Nurse Prescriber. I have a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education Practice. I have been an External Examiner at Bournemouth University since 2023 and am currently an NMC Visitor for the The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). I am a member of Manchester Metropolitan University’s Institute for Children’s Futures.
