Biography

Carl is a Professor of Innovative Manufacturing, the Director of PrintCity at Manchester Metropolitan University (ManchesterMet), a state-of-the-art 3D printing facility with over 70 printers across 7 different technologies. He is the Faculty of Science and Engineering theme Lead for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing. He has an industrial background having worked in the automotive sector for over 12 years in manufacturing. His PhD students and MSc students work on additive manufacturing and digital connectivity-related projects with Industry sponsorship in many cases. He is one of the main investigators in the newly funded £4M Centre for Digital Innovation in Manchester supporting companies in the adoption of Additive Manufacturing Technology. He sits on the Board of Directors at Gambica and is the Deputy Chair of the Gambica University Industry Council. He joined  the advisory Board of All3DP in January 2023. He was heavily involved in activities at ManchesterMet in agreeing on the collaboration with Siemens and Festo on the Connected Curriculum program. His work in manufacturing has also been published in highly regarded journals.

Interests and expertise

I am a Professor of Innovative Manufacturing, the Director of PrintCity our 3D printing facility and the Science and Engineering Faculty Theme lead for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing. I work on research projects related to manufacturing and we have a number of business engagement funded programmes where we support companies with technology adoption and/or product development. I am passionate about bringing industry and academia closer together and our Siemens connected curriculum programme is a great example of this. I also sit on the Board of Directors of the trade organisation GAMBICA where we have set up a University Industry council to bring academia and industry closer together.
