Interests and expertise

I am interested in collaborating on projects, or supervising doctoral research, related to:

  • acquired communication disability in adults;
  • shared and supported decision-making, mental capacity assessment and informed consent, particularly for people with communication disability;
  • lived experience of communication and swallowing disabilities;
  • health services research;
  • inclusive communication methods.

Mixed methods research.

Qualitative research.

Inclusive research methods, user-centred design and co-production approaches.

Impact

My research is esteemed and influential nationally and internationally within broad disciplines and is instrumental in increasing social participation for people with disabilities, which is recognised as a global challenge. My research outputs have had substantial impacts on international policy development and UK legal reform. For example, my research has been cited in best practice frameworks for the care of people with disabilities (Australian Government, 2024) and people living with dementia (Welsh Government, 2022), and in Belgian policy guidance (Belgian Healthcare Knowledge Centre, 2022). My invited expert testimony transformed the 2018 “Decision-making and mental capacity” NICE guideline. My professional body (RCSLT) cited my PhD research in submissions to parliament that informed bill reading and amendment stages in both houses for the Mental Capacity (Amendment) Bill (2018) and to the Department of Health and Social Care’s consultation on proposed changes to the Mental Capacity Act 2005 Code of Practice and implementation of the Liberty Protection Safeguards (2022). The RCSLT policy team stated that my research was instrumental in achieving the policy and legislative changes required to extend the role of Approved Mental Capacity Professional to speech and language therapists (SLTs), who will now bring their expertise in communication to safeguard the rights of people with communication disabilities and make legal processes related to deprivation of liberty more inclusive of this underserved group.

My research has translated to the field of practice in supported decision-making, mental capacity assessment and informed consent, through the publication of: book chapters in textbooks; actionable practice tools including the Mental Capacity Assessment Support Toolkit (MCAST) andthe Consent Support Tool, which can be used by researchers to ensure the informed consent process is more accessible to, and inclusive of, participants with communication needs; the design and delivery of impactful specialist training commissioned by NHS trusts; and the creation of innovative education content for the university, Community Care Inform Adults, and NIHR Clinical Trials Toolkit website.
