My profile

Biography

I am a Behavioural Ecologist, who every now and then conducts side trips into Evolutionary Biology and Animal Cognition. The main research topic of my team and me is the evolution and ecology of social behaviour, with a current focus on complex social systems. Furthermore, we are interested in how studying behaviour can inform conservation and welfare decisions. We are mainly working on aquatic animals like fishes (e.g. Lake Tanganyika cichlids, three-spined stickleback), Mantella frogs or different crustaceans to answer our questions. We combine controlled lab experiments at MMU with field work in the UK and abroad.

Teaching

I teach on undergraduate and master’s programmes within the biological sciences. My teaching focuses primarily on Animal Behaviour, often using aquatic animals as model organisms. I view research-based teaching as the basis for creating fascination for current issues in Animal Behaviour. I provide students with latest findings in the field, aiming to increase their scientific insight, and allow them to develop their own topical research interests. I foster two-way interactions between researchers and students at different levels to enable early career researchers to gain a solid understanding of scientific rigour and the academic career.  I use a combination of traditional-style lectures, hands-on practicals and discussions to help students learn and develop their skills.

Undergraduate

First year:

  • Principles of Animal Behaviour

Second year:

  • Animal Health and Welfare

Third year:

  • The Social Life of Animals (unit leader)
  • Animal Behaviour and Conservation
  • Tanzania field course

Postgraduate

  • Behavioural Biology (unit leader)
  • Zoo placements (unit leader)

Supervision

I supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations across the biological sciences programmes. My students work on questions concerning Animal Behaviour, Conservation and Welfare. I offer projects on life animals (mainly aquatic invertebrates, fishes and frogs) as well as desk-based projects. I believe that a successful dissertation project should include the complete scientific process from having an interesting idea to planning and running the experiment, analysing the data and writing a informative report. I massively enjoy guiding students through this journey. If you are interested in doing your dissertation, Mres- or PhD project with my team and me just get in touch.
