Dr Damian Mather

My profile

Biography

My academic interests lie in the law of the European Union and Brexit, in particular in European migration law & policy and the politico-legal dimensions of EU citizenship, and in counter-terror policy and human rights.

In March 2003, I won a scholarship from the Centre of European Law and Legal Studies at the University of Leeds to read for a PhD in European Law and Governance. I was awarded my doctorate in November 2008.

I am a principal lecturer at Manchester Law School, where I have worked since 2006 and been part of the senior leadership team since 2016. I am the School’s International Lead with strategic responsibility for overseas recruitment, staff-student mobility, developing global research links, forming TNE collaborative partnerships and the internationalisation of the student experience. In addition to this, I am the Faculty of Business and Law’s Student Mobility Lead with responsibility for establishing Faculty-wide mobility partnerships with other universities and colleges across the globe and coordinating inbound and outbound exchange opportunities.

In 2010, I introduced taught LLM courses into the School. This was previously a major gap in the School’s portfolio. The LLM courses that we offer have since developed significantly, including the LLMs in International Human Rights Law and in International Business Law. I also led on the approval of the LLM/LPC and LLM/BTC programmes and of the LLM in Legal Practice top-up course in collaboration with Hong Kong University SPACE from 2013 onwards.

More recently, I have been Postgraduate Research Degrees Lead and have co-led the Bar Training Course. I have also been Manchester Law School’s lead for its annual GoGlobal Week since 2023; a week of educational, cultural and social activities intended to provide all students with global opportunities and experiences. I am an experienced external panel member having been involved in the approval of LLBs, LLMs and GDLs at several HEIs in the UK and abroad.

My UG teaching focus is European Union law and human rights law whilst at PG level I contribute to the current LLM International Human Rights Law and Law, Terrorism and Human Rights units.

I have 4 completions at PGR level and would be willing to look at doctoral proposals in the field of European law, including EU migration law & citizenship, and human rights law, including the interplay between counter-terrorism and human rights.
