Interests and expertise
I am a Quaternary scientist, interested in landforms and deposits left behind by the last great ice sheets.
For my research, I use geomorphology and sedimentology to reconstruct the dynamics of ice sheets during retreat. The techniques I use include:
- Sedimentological analysis of glacial sediments to establish the processes involved and the environment in which they formed. I am particularly interested in glacial lake sediments, as they often contain a continuous record of glacial change
- Geomorphological mapping using high-resolution digital elevation models and field work to examine glacial and periglacial landforms
- Ground-penetrating radar to examine the internal structure of landforms to understand how they formed.
My teaching focuses on geomorphology, glacial landforms and deposits and reconstructing Quaternary environments.

Research outputs
My research interests include:
- Remote sensing of former glacial and periglacial landscapes using LiDAR and high resolution DEMs
- Sedimentology and geomorphology of glacial and glaciofluvial landforms
- Sedimentology of glacial lake deposits, particularly annually laminated sediments (varves)
- Reconstructing deglacial ice sheet dynamics
