Introducing Dr. Blair Hamilton, a researcher in the field of sports medicine at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). As the lead investigator of the innovative “Sporting Performance of Athletes of the Gender Spectrum” study at the University of Brighton, Dr Hamilton is at the forefront of research exploring the impact of gender-affirmative endocrine care on the athletic performance of transgender athletes. Their work aims to enhance understanding and promote inclusivity in sports.
Dr Hamilton’s research interests extend to musculoskeletal health, particularly investigating how physical activity influences bone density and overall bone health. By examining the relationship between exercise and skeletal responses, they advocate for exercise as a critical component in the promotion and maintenance of musculoskeletal health.
Dr Hamilton’s academic journey began in 2008 with national qualifications in health and fitness, followed by a Higher National Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development in 2010. Their six-year tenure in the United States included launching a personal training and sports development business, highlighting their entrepreneurial spirit.
Upon returning to Scotland in 2016, Dr Hamilton pursued an undergraduate honours degree in Exercise and Health Science at the University of Aberdeen, where they made a notable contribution by generating the first performance data for a transgender athlete in football as part of their final year project.
In January 2020, Dr Hamilton embarked on a PhD journey at the School of Sport and Health Sciences at Brighton University, focusing on the effects of gender-affirming hormone treatment on the physiology and athletic capabilities of transgender athletes. Over the past years, they have authored numerous publications and presented at both national and international conferences, sharing their expertise and insights with the broader academic community.
At MMU, Dr Hamilton is dedicated to advancing understanding and promoting equity within sports medicine for athletes of all backgrounds. Their commitment to research and advocacy continues to shape the future of inclusive practices in the field.
