Research summary

  • April 2018 to March 2019

In 2018, the Education Endowment Foundation commissioned a systematic review of the impact of digital technology on attainment in schools. The review focused on the use of technology as a method to enhance teaching.

This project set out to produce evidence from meta-analyses meeting stringent quality criteria that were published between 2012 and 2018. Each meta-analysis was rated for quality using an assessment of multiple systematic reviews (AMSTAR) and certainty of effect size using the grading of recommendations, assessment, development and evaluations (GRADE) framework.

The aim was to identify when and how digital technology can be used to raise levels of attainment.

Additionally, the project team conducted a rapid evidence assessment of studies published in the same period that reported on the impact of technology use on attainment in English schools.

Report conclusions

The report concluded that digital technology can have a positive impact on attainment when used to support mathematics, literacy instruction and foreign language learning.

Although not as conclusive, the evidence for science also suggested a positive impact of digital technology use.

In relation to pedagogical uses, the evidence suggested a positive impact on attainment when digital technology is used to:

  • offer additional practice in different subject areas

  • support computer-mediated communication in language learning

  • provide simulations and other exploratory tools such as dynamic geometry environments

  • support mobile learning across contexts

Guidance for teachers

The review was used to create a guide for teachers with four key recommendations:

  1. Consider how technology will improve teaching and learning before introducing it.

  2. Technology can be used to improve the quality of explanations and modelling.

  3. Technology offers ways to improve the impact of pupil practice.

  4. Technology can play a role in improving assessment and feedback.

The guide has been used to:

  • provide professional development for teachers

  • remodel school policies on digital learning
