Professor Mike Bresnen

Biography

I am Professor of Organisation Studies in the Department of People and Performance in the Faculty of Business and Law at Manchester Metropolitan University. I have worked previously at the universities of Manchester (2009-18), Leicester (2003-08), Warwick (1994-2003), Cardiff (1987-94) and Loughborough (1982-87). I am an experienced teacher of organisational behaviour and related people management subjects and have supervised over 200 MBA/MSc projects. My research interests centre on healthcare management and the organisation and management of projects and I have researched and published widely on healthcare managers, on the organisation and management of projects (with particular reference to the construction industry), on collaboration in supply chains, and on learning and innovation in project-based settings. I am a current member of the leadership team and former Director of the Decent Work and Productivity Research Centre at Manchester Metropolitan University(https://www2.mmu.ac.uk/decent-work-and-productivity) as well as a member of the leadership team of the cross-institutional Centre for Partnering (https://www.centreforpartnering.org/)

Interests and expertise

My teaching currently consists of mainly MBA and MSc project supervision. My current research falls into two main areas. The first is healthcare management, on which I have published a recent book and several articles on themes of healthcare leadership and management, professional identity, digitisation in healthcare, organisational change and knowledge and learning processes in journals that include Public Administration, Human RelationsSociology of Health and Illness, New Technology Work and EmploymentManagement Learning and Leadership. The second main theme is projects, project management and learning/innovation in supply chains. My work in this area constitutes a long-standing research interest and my recent publications have focused on the relationship between institutionalisation, professionalisation and project management practice and have been published in journals such as the International Journal of Project Management, the International Journal of Operations and Production Management and Construction Management and Economics. I am currently a member of the Decent Work and Productivity Research Centre (https://www2.mmu.ac.uk/decent-work-and-productivity) and also a founding member of the Centre for Partnering (https://www.centreforpartnering.org/).

Teaching

My current main teaching responsibilities centre upon MBA and MSc project supervision, of which I have supervised around 200 over the course of my career.

I have previously been a Programme Leader at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and have led and taught units at all levels across a range of subjects in the people management area, including Organisational Behaviour, Managing and Leading People, Leadership, Management Theory and Practice, Managing Change, Behavioural Science, Organisational Psychology, Knowledge and Learning in Organisations and Research Methods.

I have taught extensively on MBA programmes across all variants (full-time, part-time, modular, global online)

I have taught at other institutions in the UK (Cardiff, Warwick, Leicester, Manchester, Queen Mary, UCL, Aberystwyth) and internationally (in Stockholm, Copenhagen, St Petersburg) and have run international MBA workshops in Dubai, Hong Kong, Miami, Shanghai, Singapore and Zambia

I have delivered executive education to BP, Ford Trustmark, British Steel/Corus, Arthur Andersen and S4C

Supervision

I am particularly interested in supervising PhDs and/or DBAs in the areas of leadership, managers and management in healthcare, professionals in professional services firms, and collaboration in construction and engineering supply chains.
