January 2021 to December 2022
Our research aims to find out more about young people’s experiences of work.
Economic and political uncertainties, growing inequalities, and the technological transformation of work have far-reaching effects on the labour market.
And the COVID-19 pandemic has increased concerns about young people’s experience of work and employment.
In times of uncertainty, young people may be more vulnerable as they are less likely to have established jobs and careers.
This project will focus on people working in insecure jobs in one area in northern England. We are particularly interested in those working in the gig economy, the self-employed and those on temporary and short term contracts.
Our research will explore the personal, social and economic consequences of such working conditions, but also consider how young people are responding to and resisting uncertainty.
We aim to produce recommendations from our research - for young people, employers and politicians - about what can be done to improve young people’s working lives.
