Teaching and learning about British slavery in two post-colonial contexts, England and Jamaica: Secondary History Teachers and their pupils’ perspectives
- Principal supervisor: Professor Kate Pahl
- Supervisor: Dr Rajesh Patel
- Start date: October 2016
- End date: August 2023
Backgrounds and aims
The focus of the study is on the teachers’ perspectives: what and how they teach this emotive and controversial history, their pedagogical decision making, the rationale they give and in culturally diverse/multi-ethnic and post-colonial contexts.
Post-colonial theory and discourse is the underpinning theoretical framework for the collection and analysis of data.
The ethnographic approach is by case study (three schools in the UK and one in Jamaica). There will be observation of lessons and interviews with teachers and pupils.
