The History, Politics and Philosophy Department at Manchester Metropolitan University are delighted to invite sixth form students to attend a bespoke online conference to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the 5th Pan African Congress.
The aim of the conference is to bring attention to the significance of the Congress. What was the historical context to it, why did it happen in Manchester, who attended it and why was it important? Finally, we will consider how much resonance the PAC conference still has in 2020 with ongoing issues of systemic racism across the world.
Pre-recorded talks from Hakim Adi, Marika Sherwood, and Terence Dooley will be available to watch prior to the conference. Then on the day, we will be hosting a live lunchtime Q&A session with well-known speakers including, Alex Wheatle MBE, Lecturer and Author at Manchester Met; and Paul Okojie, Chair of the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah RACE Centre and Education Trust Board of Trustees.
In the afternoon, you will take part in creative workshops led by Manchester Met academics, alongside colleagues, Dr Jade Munslow Ong (University of Salford) and Tunde Adekoya (Artistic Director, Big People Music) on issues relating to race through history, poetry and literature.
