Non-standard entry route

When applying for the degree apprenticeship, I initially enquired about Digital and Technology Solutions Degree, as my highest previous qualification was an HND. I then realised that it was the strategic knowledge that I needed, not the operational side, and that’s what the masters in Digital and Technology Solutions provided. Because of my 16 years of experience in digital roles, and through following the University’s non-standard entry route, I was able to enrol straight on to the masters course without a first degree.

Choosing Manchester Met

I remember having several conversations with the Apprenticeship Development Manager at Manchester Met prior to starting the course. Due to the busy nature of my job, I needed a clear structure and approach around what was being delivered. I also needed access to online resources, as I started studying during the pandemic. I got all those assurances from Manchester Met from the first conversation. I got a full timetable for the whole year with clear dates, so I could plan ahead. That’s what really attracted me to studying with Manchester Met over other providers. I felt really positive about the whole experience. They delivered on promises, followed up with information, and supported me through the whole application process.

Acquiring relevant knowledge and skills

The course content has been very relevant and transferable. It was clear from an experience perspective that I could easily relate to many of the topics. In my last pathway unit, I was able to implement everything I’d written about in my assignment at an organisational level. You’re acquiring knowledge and skills that are relevant to problems that your organisation is facing. My employer has taken on board my recommendations and they’re coming to life. I’ve used my learning from the course, made recommendations to my employer, and then seen the change happening on the ground within the organisation. It’s very gratifying.

Recommending degree apprenticeships

Studying on the masters degree apprenticeship has been a positive experience and I’d recommend it to anyone. I will say to be prepared because there is a lot of work, but if you put the work in, you’ll enjoy it and you’ll start seeing the benefits. One of the biggest bonuses of studying at Manchester Met is that you’ve got some great lecturers who have a lot of knowledge. Be a sponge. Take in as much information from them as you can and don’t be afraid to ask questions because that will only increase your own confidence and expertise.
