Professor Steve Rothberg

Steve Rothberg joined Manchester Metropolitan University in January 2023. As Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, he is responsible for planning and academic resourcing, working alongside the Vice-Chancellor, on strategy and delivery. He leads the Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellors, and is also responsible for regional and business engagement.

Steve gained his BSc and PhD at the University of Southampton, Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, before joining Loughborough University as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering in 1990.

At Loughborough, his innovations in teaching led to creation of the Engineering Teaching and Learning Support Centre which went on to gain Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) status. He became the Head of the Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (2001-2007), Dean of the Faculty of Engineering (2007-2011), Pro Vice-Chancellor for Enterprise (2011-2015), and then Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research (2014-2022), leading Loughborough’s successful REF 2021 submission.

As Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Steve’s research in noise and vibration, particularly in the application of laser technology for vibration and motion measurements, has attracted awards from the National Physical Laboratory and the Society of Experimental Mechanics, and contributed to Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Optical Engineering and High-Value Manufacturing.

He holds external roles on the EPSRC Research Infrastructure Strategic Advisory Team, as a national Panel Chair for Athena Swan gender equality awards and as a member of the Greater Manchester Business Board.
