1. What do you like most about your course?
The best thing about my course is my lecturers: they are experts in what they do. Through my masters, I can speak to people who have real life experience in the industry that I want to be a part of, giving me valuable insider knowledge that is essential for the first steps into my career. My course also gives me the chance to work on real life projects and gain first-hand experience. I love how flexible and student-oriented my course is - teaching is a mix of online and face to face, so I get the best of both worlds! I can complete my studies around my work, but I still get the chance to meet my course mates and lecturers in person.
2. What made you choose Manchester Met?
I chose Manchester Met because of the course. I did lots of research into similar courses but none of them had the focus on quantitative methods that I really wanted. I also really wanted to study with PERU (Policy Evaluation and Research Unit), as they are immersed in the world of policy evaluation. Manchester is a great place to study - it’s vibrant and there is so much to do and see.
3. What are your lecturers like and how did they help you to succeed throughout your course?
My lecturers are really supportive and are always available for help and advice. We are taught by people with real life experience of the field which means we can ask questions and get relevant, true to life answers.
4. Did you complete a placement, or have you taken part in any extracurricular activities/projects alongside your studies?
I am helping with a research project for another department - a role that I got through Jobs4Students. Jobs4Students have an impressive range of opportunities for paid work for students, within and outside the university. My project is helping me understand how survey responses are gathered and how ethics are incorporated into study design. This has allowed me to add to my network of contacts across the university who work in areas that interest me.
5. What skills do you feel you have gained/developed during your studies at Manchester Met? How do you think these will help you in your future studies or career?
I have already gained an understanding of evaluation techniques. I have also deepened my understanding of the public policy landscape of the UK, which has been particularly interesting given my experience working in public services. I am looking forward to developing my research skills and working on a project for my dissertation.
