Background

I wanted to study law for two reasons. I had already decided that I wanted to be a lawyer after watching How to Get Away with Murder as law and justice intrigued me. Once that intrigue was peaked, I started realising injustices in the country that I was born and raised in (Botswana) and did not like the way individuals who were wronged were treated. I had been a victim to a number of crimes when growing up and the police had not been able to provide justice to my family which resulted in me gaining an interest in studying law so that I could get a better understanding of legal systems and how I could help those who have been wronged.

I want to be a lawyer that can speak in higher courts and not just do paperwork. I decided that this is what I wanted to do, and the Bar Training Course would be the way to achieve this. I specifically chose the LLM in Legal Practice at the Bar because I wanted to gain a masters as well as I have a specific interest in human rights and wanted to have my masters in that while also furthering my desire to be a barrister. I chose to stay at Manchester Met for my postgrad because I had come into contact with a few of the lecturers who teach on the BTC and enjoyed the familiarity of the university, the lecturers and of the city. You also get a discount, which whilst not the main reason, is a benefit.

I would recommend Manchester Met because there are many professional links. The lecturers are exceptional and will go the extra mile to ensure that you get the best result available for you.

Getting involved with pro bono

I have taken part in the Crown Prosecution Service pro bono scheme, and it was extremely beneficial as I gained practical skills and experience through this which helped me understand how to apply the skills into my work. It has benefited me as I had gained networking opportunities as well as being part of a community.

Support

My tutors are well qualified and extremely knowledgeable and provide the best experience. I would confirm that they are supportive and go the extra mile if you need help.

I have used the careers service to help with my CV and to get tips for how to prepare for interviews as well as cover letters, it is extremely beneficial.
