What sparked your interest in HRM?

I discovered HR whilst studying Business at college – specifically a HR unit – and from there I just loved it. Being able to work with and manage people was a big selling point for me.

What was your first job after graduating?

My first job was actually a recruitment role. Shortly after I started working as a HR Service Delivery Advisor and was involved in an international project, working with countries such as China, Japan, Philippines and Thailand. 

Outside of the course teaching, what other opportunities did you get involved in during your time at Manchester Met?  

I was a member of the Manchester Industrial Relations society which gave me a real insight into how the world of HR really works from industry professionals. I would definitely recommend joining to get the opportunity to ask any questions and hear stories from other people who are working in HR.

What are your greatest achievements so far?  

I would say my greatest achievements are finishing my degree during pandemic, and getting my first HR job – in which I’m still working now. I would have never been able to get this job without my degree.

What advice would you give to students who aspire to a career in HRM?

Work hard, ask questions and get your LinkedIn up and running, it’s essential! Be proactive in growing your network and building connections, they will be useful for the rest of your life. That is how I landed my first opportunity to work in HR. Also, make sure you keep up with deadlines!

What does diversity in HRM mean to you?

Diversity to me is understanding and accepting everyone. It also means innovation and ideas. Without diversity, organisations would not be as successful as they could be.
