Ilona Hodson
National Apprenticeship Manager, McDonald's
Why did McDonald’s choose to offer degree apprenticeships?
There was a real appetite from our employees. This was an opportunity for all, no matter what age or their previous education experience, they had the opportunity to gain a nationally-recognised qualification. Some of our employees had previously completed the foundation degree so understood the benefits that it had brought to the business.
How has McDonald’s benefited from the work done by your degree apprentices?
It gives our employees a chance to dig a little further into their business. Many of them are working in busy restaurants and are challenged each day. By completing external reading and digging deeper they can look at alternative ideas to resolve any problems they may have within the restaurant.
It gives them the confidence to be able to excel in their roles, unlocking potential, with many of them being promoted whilst completing the degree programme.
Why did you choose Manchester Met and how have you found working with us?
We have worked with Manchester Metropolitan University for over 12 years now. They understand the McDonald’s system and understand the challenges that our students have working in busy restaurants. They support and provide solid advice to ensure the learner journey is aligned with our business whilst also providing an enjoyable learner experience.
Would you recommend degree apprenticeships and Manchester Met to other employers?
Yes. The relationship over the years has become stronger as they have a real desire to understand the business and grow with us.
