Background

I chose to study International Tourism and Hospitality Management at Manchester Met after completing my undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Manchester. Seeking a change of scenery and driven by my long-standing interest in the hospitality sector, I was drawn to Manchester Met’s renowned programme and the opportunity to explore a new field in a city that has always felt like home to me.

The course

I would highly recommend Manchester Met for the International Tourism and Hospitality Management course because of its expert faculty, practical learning, networking opportunities, and vibrant cultural experience of Manchester. Key skills I have developed include marketing expertise, sustainable practices, improved communication, and analytical thinking, making me confident for the workplace.

Among the various components of the course, I particularly enjoy the units that delve into marketing and sustainable tourism practices. Exploring marketing strategies has been fascinating, and delving into sustainable tourism practices has given me a deeper appreciation for responsible and ethical approaches.

The teaching style, which incorporates a mix of lectures and interactive workshops, keeps me engaged and promotes active learning. I also appreciate the course’s inclusion of external events and industry talks, which provide real-world insights and keep me updated on industry trends and challenges. I have made great friends not just in my course, but also outside of university, and my next steps involve a placement year to gain hands-on experience and exploring various career paths within the hospitality and tourism sector.

The course has significantly shaped my career aspirations and outlook for the future. It ignited a strong interest in marketing within the hospitality industry, a path I am now considering for my career. Through the course, I have acquired a diverse set of skills and attributes that I can readily transfer to my future career. These include advanced knowledge of marketing strategies tailored to the hospitality sector, a deep understanding of sustainable tourism practices, effective communication skills, and the ability to analyse industry trends and consumer behaviour. The course has indeed steered me towards a specific direction in my career. The focus on marketing and sustainable tourism aligns perfectly with my newfound passion and has greatly influenced my choice of work within the hospitality industry.

I am enthusiastic about participating in a placement programme as it will provide me with invaluable hands-on experience and opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge gained during the course in a real-world setting. This practical exposure is crucial for enhancing my employability and gaining insights into the daily operations of the industry.

I have had the privilege of attending several industry talks featuring experienced hotel managers, which has provided me with unique insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by professionals in the field. Additionally, the external business visits to various establishments in Cumbria and Manchester have been eye-opening experiences that have deepened my understanding of hospitality operations.

Manchester has this incredible energy that’s hard to describe. It’s a place where you can feel the heartbeat of creativity, culture, and innovation. The city truly embraces its student population. There are so many discounts, special offers, and student-oriented activities that make it easy to have a great time on a budget. Plus, the fact that there are students from all over the world means I’m constantly meeting new people and making friends from diverse backgrounds. My favourite place to hang out with friends outside of university is the Northern Quarter. The mix of quirky cafes, vintage shops, and street art creates a unique and vibrant atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot for grabbing coffee, exploring cool boutiques, and enjoying the artsy scene. Being in Manchester gives me direct access to a wide range of industries and professionals. There are frequent industry events, workshops, and career fairs where I can connect with potential employers and gain insights into different fields.
