Why Manchester Met

I chose to do the Bar Training Course as I’ve always been very performative. I have also always had a keen interest in English and reading. Because of this, I felt a career at the Bar would be perfect for me. I am able to both advocate and study the written word, analyse cases and persuade people with my arguments.

I chose Manchester Met to do my course as I’m from the Manchester area, so the central location was perfect for me. I also knew that the bar course at the university was both successful and friendly. My favourite thing about studying in Manchester is the people. Everyone is so friendly, and the nightlife is fantastic. Manchester to me is home and getting to study in a place like this is wonderful.

I would recommend Manchester Metropolitan to prospective students because of the friendly environment, modern facilities and fantastic teaching staff. When I have finished the course I will be starting my pupillage which begins in September 2023.

Getting involved with pro bono

I have been involved in pro bono during my studies. As part of the university, I successfully applied at the Greater Manchester Law Centre. The opportunity made available for Manchester Metropolitan students, allows me to volunteer once a week, where I represent my own clients in their PIP appeal claims at the Tribunals. This experience has been invaluable.

Support

My tutors have been incredibly knowledgeable and supportive. Whenever I have needed my personal tutor, she has always been there for me. She has called me on teams, scheduled meetings and always accommodated any issues I’ve had.

Top tips

  • Be prepared, the course is intense but very rewarding, so make sure you’re mentally prepared for this before starting
  • Make use of your chambers rooms, it’s a great way to make fiends and make yourself study without all the noise of the public library
  • Talk to the staff, don’t ever struggle in silence. The staff are so welcoming and will always find solutions for you whenever you need it.
