Chartered Manager Fast-Track Degree Apprenticeship, Greater Manchester Learning Provider Network
Why did you choose a degree apprenticeship?
I have previously done apprenticeships at different levels and this is currently my third, so I really believe that apprenticeships are a great way to build a career. They allow you to gain a recognised qualification whilst at the same time getting relevant experience in the workplace.
Greater Manchester Learning Provider Network (GMLPN) work in the Apprenticeships sector, so I had previous knowledge about Degree Apprenticeships. The decision was an easy one when we started discussing the possibility with my employer.
Looking back over your time (so far), how have you found the whole experience?
I’m currently in the first few months of my Degree Apprenticeship, so still in the early stages, but my first unit has taught me lots. It has given me some tangible recommendations that I have been able to take back into GMLPN to implement.
I’d also say it’s quite difficult at times, managing your workload, university work and also your personal life at the same time but having a supportive employer and training provider has helped.
Can you share how your degree apprenticeship has helped shape your future and supported your career progression?
All my apprenticeships, not just my Degree Apprenticeship, I think has 100% helped to support my career progression. In college, I never would have known the job I do even existed and with my apprenticeships I’ve gone from a Project Administrator to an Operations/Project Manager in the space of six years which I’m sure wouldn’t have been possible if I’d have just gone straight into work from college.
What impact has your degree apprenticeship had in the organisation?
One of the recommendations from my first unit is to implement a Technology Strategy within GMLPN. The analysis I did on my own organisation to support my assignment allowed me to thoroughly assess how GMLPN performs in terms of technology. The implementation of this strategy will allow us to stay up to date and current in an ever-changing technological world and will help us to better support our members. One practical element of this was producing an interactive/online Annual Report as opposed to our previous printed version.
Would you recommend a degree apprenticeship?
I would 100% recommend a Degree Apprenticeship!
Do you have any advice for future degree apprentices?
Be resilient when applying – my Degree Apprenticeship was slightly different as I was already employed at GMLPN – but when I was applying for my first apprenticeship, I had to apply for so many. Don’t give up!
Balancing work and study – I’d say that having good communication with your employer can really help this. Your employer is investing time and money to develop you and your career.
