Research: Texonomy
Engineering solutions to recycle and reuse denim waste.
Summary
Research summary
- Project timescale: 2021 - 2022.
Texonomy is a British Council funded project supporting the textile industry in Pakistan in its transition towards a circular economy. To achieve this, a network of academic, commercial and industrial partners is being established to enable stakeholders to work together developing solutions that enhance the circularity of the local textile industry.
Researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University have a key role in Texonomy, engineering solutions for the recycling of denim offcuts generated during the manufacturing process. Their pilot technology will produce valuable resources that can be used in the creation of new bioplastics from denim waste.
Denim is the first material to be trialled, however, there is potential to expand inputs to include other textile waste in future.

Outputs
Research outputs
- Development of a new recycling technology, combining biological and chemical processes to convert textile fibres into valuable materials and products
- Up-scaling of the developed technology, creating a pilot-scale plant with the capacity to process high volumes of textile waste
- Production and testing of product prototypes made from recycled plastic derived from textile waste
