Introduction

Black History Month UK is a time to remember and celebrate the African and Caribbean communities’ achievements and contributions to the British economy, culture and history.

The theme for Black History Month UK 2024 is ‘Celebrating our Changemakers’. It is an opportunity to learn and reflect on events such as the First Pan African Conference, the arrival of Caribbean soldiers in Britain to fight in WW2, and the election of Black and Asian MPs in 1983; these pivotal moments demonstrate the ongoing impact of African and Caribbean communities on the UK’s political and social landscape.

At Manchester Met, we celebrate diversity and remain committed to our Inclusive and Diverse Culture Strategy to build an intentionally inclusive culture for all.

As part of our work towards the Race Equality Charter Bronze Award, the University has developed Race Equity Objectives and an Action Plan, designedto enhance the representation, progression, and success of Black, Asian, and minority ethnic staff and students in higher education.

This Black History Month, we encourage everyone to celebrate the changemakers of the past and present and reflect on how we can contribute to a more inclusive future - ensuring Manchester Met continues to be an environment where diversity thrives.
