Take part in Future Me Week

On the afternoon of 22 January, Manchester Met is hosting a student “Careers Crossroads Conference” aimed at supporting students in their career progression. We know that students with low social capital find it hardest to gain insight in some sectors and this year we are focussing on tech, digital, marketing, consultancy, sales, and project management.

We are aiming the day primarily at students looking to explore careers not aligned to their current degree, but all activity is open to everyone. The afternoon is a mixture of talks on career pathways, hands on activity and even the chance to gain qualifications and forms part of our Future Me Week. If you would like to take part either by helping with a workshop, giving a talk or anything else please do reach out as we’d love to hear from you and your impact as alumni can make a real difference to our current students.

International webinars - call for speakers

We are looking for International alumni, from any subject area and study level, who would be willing to give an hour of their time to speak about their experience as a student in the UK, and then about their journey since graduating. We are equally interested in:

  •  Alumni who have returned to their home country to start their career;
  •  Alumni who have stayed in the UK, or taken a role in a different country, since graduating

International webinars help prospective students decide on their study and career plans - they take place online, so you can volunteer from anywhere in the world.

Support students on our Young Enterprise Unit

The Department of Strategy, Enterprise, and Sustainability (SES) is inviting alumni to come on to campus as business advisors or dragons for our Young Enterprise (YE) students.

The business advisor workshops offer the opportunity for students to pitch their business ideas to a practitioner audience in an informal setting and receive feedback based on the advisor’s expertise and experience. These quick-fire business advisor meetings truly test out students’ knowledge of their business.

The dragons usually attend a launch day, mark the stands, and informally discuss the businesses with the students. They then listen to and assess pitches for investment.

Become a panel member: Operations, Technology, Events and Hospitality Management

We would like to invite you to support a panel session on Wednesday 27 November, 11am to 1pm, for Operations, Technology, Events and Hospitality Management postgraduate students. This session aims to provide students with insights into your career journey, tips on entering the industry and an opportunity to share valuable advice. During the session, students will have the chance to ask you questions about your experiences and seek guidance.

If this is something that you would like to be involved with, please email [email protected] for further details.

Hong Kong Law mentoring

Like Me Like You: share your experience by recording a self-shot video

We want to hear from alumni in a range of industries from all courses who are interested in sharing a self-shot recording about their time at Manchester Met and career journey. These recordings will be available for students to access throughout the year to inspire them to think about their career following graduation.

We will provide questions for you to answer and guidance on recording your video. If you are interested in taking part, please email [email protected]

Become a mentor to our students

Can you mentor a Manchester Met student?

Mentor Me is the career mentoring programme that matches professionals working in industry, with Manchester Met students. It provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an insight into the world of work and for mentors to share their sector knowledge and experience.

The commitment is one or two virtual meetings a month, and the arrangement can last for as long as you and the student find the relationship beneficial.

If you would like to be involved in Mentor Me 2024/25, get more information by emailing [email protected].
