Biography

I have 20 years of experience working in secondary schools in a variety of roles. I have been a member of senior leadership teams and was head of mathematics for 10 years. As a teacher researcher, I worked on a number of initiatives with MMU and in 2008 I joined the mathematics team at MMU on a permanent basis.

Since 2004, I have worked extensively on the development of a classroom approach based upon Realistic Mathematics Education (RME). This has taken the form of several funded projects: For example, the ‘Developing Maths in Context’, the ‘Making Sense of Maths’ and the ‘Nuffield Post 16 Project’, all of which involved ongoing CPD for teachers and measuring the effects of a RME approach on pupil achievement. The Making Sense of Maths project led to a series of text books of the same name, published by Hodder Education. I am currently working on a Education Endowment Foundation funded project, writing and trialling RME materials for students and teachers at KS3. This project involves working with 120 schools and the production of classroom materials freely available on our website (www.rme.org.uk).

I mainly teach on the Mathematics PGCE Programme, the Mathematics Enhancement Courses and the BSc Secondary Mathematics with QTS course. I also have responsibility for admissions onto the Secondary PGCE Programme.
