Teaching
I teach on both the undergraduate Primary Education degree courses: BA Primary Education and BA Primary Education with Mathematics.
I also teach on the PGCE Primary Education and have previously taught on the PGCE Secondary and SCITT courses.
Supervision
I supervise doctoral students on the professional doctorate degree.
I welcome contact from prospective doctoral students who have an interest in the following areas:
- Social justice and social mobility, in particular the sociology of elites, e.g. private schools.
- Mathematics education
- Research using a Bourdieusian conceptual framework.
Research outputs
My research interests include teachers’ capital and how this might be transmitted to students, professional doctoral students’ identity, and mathematics education.
My EdD thesis was titled, “Privileging entry to higher education: when capital counts”. Drawing on a Bourdieusian conceptual framework, the thesis examined how teachers’ social and cultural capital might advantage their students when they applied to elite universities. I researched the teachers’ capital and how this might be transmitted to students through a programme.
