Outstanding success in the 2025 Advance HE National Teaching Excellence Awards
The University is driving meaningful change in response to the global climate crisis

Manchester Metropolitan has achieved prestigious national recognition in the 2025 Advance HE Teaching Excellence Awards, which celebrate the exceptional contributions of individuals and teams who teach or support student learning across UK higher education.
At the heart of this year’s success is the pioneering Carbon Literacy programme, which has been awarded a Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence. The initiative is led by Dr Rachel Dunk and Dr Cormac Lawler (Faculty of Science and Engineering), and delivered in partnership with Jane Mörk, Liam Bluer, Sophie Leigh, Professor Liz Price and Dr Theresa Nicholson.
Recognised for its innovation and impact, the programme is driving meaningful change in response to the global climate crisis, equipping students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to take informed climate action in their personal, academic and professional lives.
This recognition highlights the University’s sector-leading approach to sustainability in education and supports its strategic commitment to embed carbon literacy across all courses by 2026, as outlined in the Road to 2030 Strategy.
In addition to this collaborative award, two colleagues have received individual honours for their outstanding teaching:
- Dr Iwi Ugiagbe-Green (Faculty of Business and Law)
- Dr Alexandra Hay (Faculty of Health and Education)
Both have been awarded National Teaching Fellowships in recognition of their sustained and transformative contributions to student learning and the wider academic community.
These awards collectively showcase the strength of Manchester Met’s academic community and its shared commitment to inclusive, high-quality teaching that prepares students for a rapidly changing world.
Professor Andy Dainty, Vice-Provost and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education, said: “These awards are a powerful recognition of the quality and impact of our teaching. The Carbon Literacy team and all the award winners exemplify our shared commitment to educational excellence, and their work is helping to shape a learning environment where students and colleagues can flourish and make a real difference.
“This recognition marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to deliver transformative education and lead positive change across the higher education sector.”
