Mate completed his PhD at the University of Liverpool in 2023, and his research focuses on international relations, ethnicity, nationalism, and minority rights. He is an expert in South East Europe, where he investigates the dynamic interplay between the international system, state policies, and individual experiences, focusing on kin-communities.

In parallel to starting his position at the MMU, Mate continues to teach at the University of Liverpool. In 2022 and 2023, he expanded his research agenda as a postdoctoral research assistant at King’s College London, contributing to a project investigating a grassroots environmental mobilization in Poland and Serbia. This work draws from his extensive experience living and studying in various countries across East and South East Europe, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Slovakia.

Mate is also an active participant in various academic and professional societies. He collaborates with organizations such as the Association for Studies of Nationalities and the British International Studies Association, where he holds the role of South East Europe Working Group co-convenor, as well as ASEEES and BASSEES. His commitment to fostering knowledge and academic growth extends to his engagement with Europe and the World Centre at the University of Liverpool, where he organizes a multitude of academic and public events, in addition to facilitating professional and skill development workshops for the postgraduate community.
