Financial expert and entrepneuer Antony Jenkins CBE has been awarded an Honorary Degree in recognition of his contribution to Banking, Apprenticeships and Technical Education.

Antony Jenkins CBE received his honorary doctorate from Manchester Metropolitan University today (Tuesday 25 July) during a graduation ceremony at Bridgewater Hall.

Honorary degrees are awarded to those who have made major contributions to the academic work of the University or who have earned distinction for services to their sector.

Antony is the founder, chair and CEO of 10x Banking alongside his roles as an external member of the Bank of England’s Prudential Regulation Committee and Chair of Currencies Direct, one of Europe’s leading non-bank providers of currency exchange and international payment services. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of Palamon Capital Partners.

Previously, Antony was Chief Executive Officer of Barclays Plc. He held a key position at Citigroup and was the former Director of Blockchain until 2022.

Antony is involved with a foundation called Reboot the Future, which works with young people and influential leaders to build a compassionate and sustainable future. The foundation focuses on providing educational resources and standalone projects.

Receiving his honorary degree, he said: “As a proud Northerner with a strong working-class background, I am hugely grateful and humbled by this award today. As a child, I suffered from significant health issues and struggled to read and write. With a mixed academic track record, it was the support of educators and family members that gave me the drive and determination to succeed.

“It’s also a huge privilege to be given this award alongside degree apprentices today. I am a keen supporter of earning whilst you learn and appreciate the positive impact these apprenticeships have on our communities.

“If I have any advice for the Graduating class of 2023, it is that you should do what you love - both personally and professionally. Whilst life can be hard and doesn’t always go to plan, I believe you should always treat others how you wish to be treated. It’s my aim to surround myself with great people and continue to make a difference.”

Antony was awarded a CBE for services to business in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in June 2021.
