New book from Law School academic praised by alumnus
A legal textbook co-authored by a Law School academic has been praised as “a breath of fresh air” by a Manchester Met alumnus.
Zachary Clough, a graduate of our LPC programme in the Law School, attributes the book to his better understanding of legal systems, skills and employability gained during his time at university.
Senior Lecturer Catherine has written Part II of the book, Legal Systems and Skills, to help students gain the skills they need to thrive in their studies and career.
Published by Oxford University Press (OUP), Catherine’s writing provides up-to-date analysis and guidance on academic skills such as problem-solving and essay writing, as well as practical skills such as case and matter analysis, and negotiation.
Catherine said: “I am delighted to have worked with Oxford University Press again. For this edition I drew on my own experience of academia, legal practice, and of listening carefully to what my students and colleagues were saying they needed to flourish.
“As a result, the book includes lots of downloadable diagrams and flowcharts, as well as accompanying online resources such as self-test questions and practical exercises. I am particularly proud that we have succeeded in publishing in these challenging circumstances in which we find ourselves. The book can now support students and lecturers through a significant period of change, as well as supporting those students seeking to qualify as solicitors in the new ‘super-exam’ beginning next year.
Zachary said: “Having the concept of employability within the book works brilliantly. The end goal of any student is to eventually gain employment. Legal Systems & Skills by this stage has already explained and fortified your foundational legal knowledge, commercial awareness, academic and practical skills. It then shows you how to apply your knowledge and skills to seeking employment, helping you to showcase yourself effectively.
“I would highly recommend Legal Systems and Skills to all students thinking of a career in law, both in practice and in academia.”
With OUP’s help and consent, Catherine has also made her writing available free of charge to students selected by the Social Mobility Business Partnership, for whom she volunteers as Resilience Trainer. The charity supports students from low income backgrounds in their pursuit of a career in law or finance.
Legal Systems and Skills is available to buy in print and as an ebook, priced at £33.99.
