Uniwide languages
Have you ever considered learning a language? If your course is eligible, you can study a language alongside your degree for free with Uniwide.
About Uniwide
How it works
Our Uniwide languages are available to students who can swap a unit from their main degree. Speak to your programme leader to find out if your course is eligible.
Foreign languages provide an advantage in the job market and are a great way to enhance your CV. You’ll have a great story to tell future employers and you’ll pick up a range of transferable skills.
Available languages
You can choose from:
- French
- Spanish
- Japanese
- Mandarin Chinese
- Modern Standard Arabic
- English as a Foreign Language for non-native speakers
You can start at the beginner level, regardless of your year of study. We also offer higher levels, though availability depends on student numbers and not all levels may be available each year.
About our lessons
Our lessons involve lots of communicative and interactive activities. You’ll interact with native-speaking tutors and other learners in a collaborative atmosphere. You’ll also get to meet students from all over the University.
About the units and assessments
When do the units run?
The Uniwide language units will run alongside your other units in:
- semester one starting in September and October
- semester two starting in January and February
The classes will take place twice a week for three hours in total, on campus.
15 credit units
If you’re taking a language as a 15-credit unit, you’ll study it in either semester one or two, depending on the level, availability, and timetable.
We offer the beginner level in most languages in semester one, and again in semester two.
Assessments
We’ll assess you in speaking, listening, reading and writing. These are spread out across the semester.
30 credit units
If you’re taking a language as a minor route on your degree, you’ll study the language in both semesters one and two. You’ll study 15 credits in semester one and 15 credits in semester two.
Assessments
You’ll complete four assessment tasks each semester to ensure you’re making progress.
