Biography
As well as a part-time (0.2) Professor of Law at Manchester Law School I currently also work as a consultant to Osgoode Professional Development in Osgoode Hall Law School, and hold a Visiting Professorship at the Chinese University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law (third term of post).
Previously I was Distinguished Professor of Practice - Legal Education at Osgoode, and Honorary Professor, ANU College of Law. Prior to that I was Professor of Law at the ANU College of Law, and Director of the PEARL centre (Profession, Education and Regulation in Law); I was a part-time Professor of Law, Nottingham Law School, served nine years as a Visiting Professor at Hong Kong University Faculty of Law; was Professor of Legal Education at Northumbria Law School, and before that Professor of Law in the Glasgow Graduate School (GGSL), University of Strathclyde where I was Co-Director of Legal Practice Courses, and Director of the innovative Learning Technologies Development Unit at the GGSL, as well as Director of the two-year, JISC/UKCLE-funded project, SIMPLE (SIMulated Professional Learning Environment).
I’m the author / co-author / editor of seven books. I founded & co-edited two book series, Emerging Legal Education and Digital Games, Simulations and Learning, currently co-editing the former. I am Consultant Editor to the European Journal of Law & Technology, and have published widely in the fields of legal education and professional learning design. My specialisms include interdisciplinary educational design, and the use of technology-enhanced learning at all levels of legal education. I was appointed a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2015), HEA National Teaching Fellow (2011), a Fellow of the RSA (2009), and Honorary Vice President of the British and Irish Law Education and Technology Association (BILETA, 2022). Research & scholarship

At MLS I’ll be working on a range of activities:
- Leading an online Simulated Client (SC) initiative, which will include assisting colleagues to dovetail the initiative into relevant programmes and bring this wonderful learning experience to students
- Developing cutting-edge technology-enhanced postgrad professional legal education provision at MLS in areas of learning and assessment, and developing staff capacity to embed digital innovation in their programmes
- Continuing my research & scholarship and assisting colleagues in MLS who wish to contribute to the scholarship of learning and teaching by co-writing, reviewing, holding workshops etc.
- Assisting in organising and bringing scholarly events to MLS
- Raising the profile of MLS nationally & internationally within legal education and professional practice
- Bringing international contacts to the School to enhance our collective knowledge and our educational practices
