Biography

Senior Lecturer in Law with a particular interest in media freedom of expression, integrity in journalism and protection of journalists’ sources. 

Contributing panelist to Whistling at the Fake, a NATO-funded project that seeks to facilitate public engagement and debate in the threats posed by targeted misinformation, disinformation and fake news.

Contributor to the School’s response to public consultation on HRA reform, with a specific input on press freedoms and constraints.

Research interests include:

  • Engaging communities in accessing and using legal conversations to pursue their participation in public life
  • Role and potential of media to empower and engage citizens in debates on matters of public interest. 

NCTJ qualified journalist and author of Law and Youth Work.

Interests and expertise

Background

Former Head of Service and Strategic Commissioner for young people at Manchester City Council.  Expertise in development of evidence-based early intervention services for young people at risk of social exclusion and in commissioning adolescent mental health services and management of city’s youth estate.
