TOURISM and hospitality research at MMU is world-class, according to a survey of universities across the globe.
MMU has become a leading centre in tourism, specialising in cultural tourism; sport-related tourism, adventure tourism, ethnicity and tourism; sexuality and tourism and sustainable tourism.
Now, a survey by the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research has ranked MMU 17th in the world and 2nd in the UK only to Surrey.
The rankings are based on published research output in refereed journals since the early nineties.
Impacts and ideas
Professor Charles Brennan, Head of Food & Tourism Management at MMU, said: "Our top 20 ranking illustrates the impact we are having in developing initiatives for the future of the nation and of international tourism in general.
"This is a proud achievement for the University and recognises the extraordinary reputation of our researchers."
Recent PhD research covers cruise ships and the conference market; holidays taken by the Irish community; locals' attitudes to gay tourists; spa tourists; and food scares and consumer behaviour".
Added Professor Brennan: "The recent economic meltdown has had an impact on our understanding of how we as consumers use tourism and the hospitality sector.
UK tourism
"For instance, volunteer tourism, sport tourism and developing customer focussed hospitality experiences are crucial in terms of business development and the financial health of regions.
"In terms of economic regeneration, promoting tourist attractions and creating event destinations is crucial to the future growth of the UK economy, which relies so heavily on the tourism and hospitality industries for economic stability."
