Community Engagement at Manchester Metropolitan
Introduction
We are proud to be a university at the heart of a local community, our campus is within Hulme and extends into Manchester city centre.
Our staff and students are passionate about making a difference. As a partner of the GM Civic University Agreement, we recognise our opportunity to work with communities to deliver social, economic and environmental change in the city region.
In line with our commitment to our closest communities, we are working extensively with residents and groups in Hulme. Our work includes co-produced projects and events, participation at key community networks and improving how local communities can interact with our campus, staff and students.
Our priorities for Hulme community engagement

Participation in key neighbourhood networks including Tenant and Resident meetings to actively listen, identify areas of collaboration and share key information

Delivery of sustainability specific engagement opportunities including co-produced projects and events with a focus on active travel in Hulme

Delivery of Hulme specific engagement opportunities including local festival programming and co-produced projects with a focus on health and wellbeing and the impact of the cost-of-living crisis in Hulme

Operational support to enable improved community interaction with our campus, staff and students e.g., facilitating space usage by Hulme based community groups and improving the way we work to support collaboration

Proactively identifying issues and responding to complaints from Hulme residents and stakeholders

Creating and delivering clear communications which reach Hulme communities and outline ways to get in touch and connect with our campus, staff and students

A community engaged University
We work extensively with our closest neighbours and partners to ensure our research delivers real world impact and builds on our long history of working with communities.
We support our students to connect with our closest communities through their studies, volunteering, paid and/or co-curricular opportunities. Our innovative Rise programme plays a key role in providing opportunities for our students to connect with local voluntary and community groups through activities, projects and volunteering.
Supporting students and residents as neighbours
We are proud to be part of the Manchester Student Partnership, working alongside Manchester Student Homes, Manchester City Council and Greater Manchester Police to ensure that both students and local residents are supported as neighbours. We work closely with local resident groups to share information and collaborate on neighbourhood activities throughout the year.
