ABOUT MY CAREER

I decided to study at Manchester Metropolitan University for several reasons, one of which was the course’s suitability for career changers like me. The programme I enrolled in, MSc in Business Analytics did not require previous experience and the units were beginner friendly, making it an ideal choice for someone like me who was transitioning into a new field. This aspect was particularly appealing to me as it allowed me to pursue my interest in analytics without feeling disadvantaged due to my background in biological sciences. Additionally, Manchester Met offered scholarships for international students, which made the fees more affordable and eased the financial burden associated with studying abroad. Opting to study in the UK also provided me with the opportunity to immerse myself in a new culture and educational environment, which I believed would enrich my academic experience and broaden my perspectives as an international student. Overall, the combination of a suitable course structure, affordable fees, and the chance to pursue my studies in an international setting made Manchester Met an attractive choice for me.

My first and current job after graduating is as a Graduate Data Analyst in the Strategic Planning Directorate, at Manchester Met. I obtained this position through my academic background and relevant experience gained during my studies. Having completed a MSc Business Analytics at Manchester Met, I was equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge in data analysis, SQL, and Power BI, among others. Additionally, my previous experience as a Data Analyst through Jobs4Students provided me with practical experience in data analysis and project management. This combination of academic qualifications and professional experience made me a suitable candidate for the role, and I was thrilled to join the team at Manchester Met to contribute to meaningful projects within the university community.

As a data analyst at Manchester Met, I work closely with the Central Analytical Team to develop metrics for evaluating various university projects, services, and practices using advanced data analysis techniques. From processing and cleaning data to coding intricate algorithms, my days are filled with dynamic challenges that require both creativity and precision. Utilizing cutting-edge tools such as Alteryx for efficient data preparation, I ensure that our analysis is built on a solid foundation of accurate data.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is the opportunity to provide actionable insights through rigorous testing of data models and scenarios. I’ve been contributing to enhancing the student experience and supporting the university’s strategic objectives. I approach every task with a feeling of purpose and devotion to the organisation that has been so important to my growth both personally and professionally.

I acquired a diverse set of skills during my studies that have been essential in shaping my career journey. The immersive academic environment at Manchester Met not only equipped me with technical expertise but also sharpened my soft skills, preparing me for the challenges of the professional world. One of the key skills I gained at Manchester Met is proficiency in data analysis tools and techniques. Through rigorous coursework and hands-on projects, I developed a solid foundation in tools such as SQL, SPSS, and Power BI, enabling me to extract actionable insights from complex datasets. Moreover, Manchester Met fostered a collaborative atmosphere that nurtured my teamwork and communication skills. Through group projects, presentations, and extracurricular activities, I learned the importance of effective collaboration and clear communication in achieving shared goals.

Of all the skills gained at Manchester Met, I have found that my proficiency in data analysis and visualisation techniques, particularly using tools like Power BI, has been most frequently utilised in my career so far. The ability to derive insights from data and effectively communicate findings through visualisations has been a cornerstone of my role as a Data Analyst, enabling me to drive informed decision-making and contribute meaningfully to organisational objectives.

While I did not have a formal placement as part of my academic programme, I did gain valuable work experience during the summer while completing my dissertation. I secured a role as a Data Analyst through Jobs4Students which has proven to be beneficial in several ways. Firstly, this opportunity provided me with invaluable hands-on experience in the field of data analysis, allowing me to apply theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom to real-world scenarios. Whether it was conducting data analysis, collaborating with colleagues, or presenting findings, I had the opportunity to put theory into practice and gain hands-on experience in my field of study. Secondly, my work experience gave me the insights into the day-to-day operations of the industry. I was able to observe how concepts learned in the classroom translated into the workplace, gaining a deeper understanding of industry practices and trends. Additionally, this role allowed me to expand my professional network and build connections within the industry. By interacting with colleagues, supervisors, and industry professionals, I was able to establish valuable contacts that have proven beneficial in my career development. My Jobs4Students role has been instrumental in preparing me for the transition from academia to the professional world. It provided me with practical skills, industry insights, and networking opportunities that have been invaluable in my career journey.

MY TOP TIP FOR STUDENTS IS

To never underestimate the power of networking. Building and nurturing professional relationships can open doors to opportunities that may not be advertised publicly. Attend industry events, join professional associations, and connect with professionals in your field through platforms like LinkedIn. Don’t be afraid to reach out, introduce yourself, and ask for advice or informational interviews. Networking not only helps you stay informed about job openings but also allows you to learn from others’ experiences, gain insights into industry trends, and establish valuable connections that can support your career growth.
