If you have problems with your Student visa

Delayed CAS number

If you haven’t received your CAS number, make sure you have:

  • Accepted your offer unconditionally.
  • Paid any required deposits or provided evidence of sponsorship.
  • Provided any additional information requested by the University.
  • Submitted a CAS request.

If you have met these requirements and still haven’t received your CAS within ten working days, please contact the Student Visa team.

Problems with supporting documents

Make sure all your supporting documents meet UKVI’s requirements. This includes:

  • Translations of documents not in English.
  • Bank statements showing sufficient funds for at least 28 consecutive days.

If you’re unsure about your documents, seek advice from the Student Visa team.

Delays in visa processing

Visa processing times can vary. You can check current processing times on the UK government website. To avoid delays:

  • Apply as early as possible.
  • Ensure all documents are correct and complete.
  • Regularly check your email for updates from UKVI.

Visa refusal

If your visa application is refused, don’t panic. Carefully read the refusal notice to understand why your application was unsuccessful. Common reasons for refusal include:

  • Incorrect or incomplete documents.
  • Insufficient funds.
  • Verification checks not responded to by your bank.

You can usually reapply for a visa, addressing the issues mentioned in the refusal notice. However, please note we do not issue any further CAS if your visa has been refused for the following reasons:

  • Deception
  • Failing the genuine student test

In any instance where you have received a refusal, you must contact the Student Visa team.

Technical issues with the Visa Application System

If you encounter technical issues while applying online, try the following:

  • Clear your browser’s cache and cookies.
  • Use a different web browser.
  • Try applying at a different time of day.

If problems persist, contact UKVI’s technical support.

If your visa is incorrect

When you get your biometric residence permit (BRP), you will need to check it has the correct information.

This includes:

  • Your personal details - such as name, gender, and date of birth.

You should also check it has the correct information for your conditions of stay in the UK:

  • You should be eligible to work 20 hours a week for degree-level study and above.
  • You should be able to work 10 hours a week for a foundation course or English language programme.
  • If you are studying on a visit or short-term study visa, you cannot work part-time.
  • For courses longer than 12 months, the end date on your visa should be four months after the course end date shown on your CAS.

If you think that there may be an error on your BRP, please contact our Student Visa team so that we can check it for you. Please do this straight away as there may be a deadline for you to report the error by and receive a free replacement.

  • If there is an error on your BRP and you applied outside the UK, you can report a problem online. Any corrections made are free if you report them on time.
  • If you applied for a visa extension inside the UK and you need to report an error, you should ask for a visa administrative review. UKVI will refund the review charge if they agree that there is an error.

When your BRP is re-issued, we will need to update your student record with your new BRP details. You can help us do this by contacting the Student Visa team with a copy of the front and back of your new BRP.
