Why study philosophy?

Philosophy is about making sense of ourselves and everything around us by critically engaging with the world. Philosophers ask and try to answer the most fundamental theoretical and practical questions – from trying to understand the nature of consciousness, to whether current political institutions enable political freedom. We will challenge you to actively and critically reflect on ground-breaking philosophical theories from historical figures such as Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Hume, Kant, Hegel, and Nietzsche, to more contemporary thinkers such as Frantz Fanon, Simone de Beauvoir, Hannah Arendt, Kimberlé Crenshaw, and Judith Butler.

Our expert staff offer a supportive and vibrant environment, coupled with intellectually stimulating and thought-provoking programmes of study. You’ll cultivate an impressive array of analytical and critical skills invaluable for your future – with the power to positively influence others and drive progressive change. And, because philosophy combines so well with other subjects – like politics – you can follow the distinct intellectual path that’s right for you.
